❓ Hoarding Services — Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers to the questions we hear most often
Do you work in stages, or does everything have to be done at once?
We absolutely offer staged cleanup options. Many of our clients prefer to complete their project in phases — tackling one room or area at a time over multiple visits. Staged projects often feel less overwhelming and allow the homeowner to process the changes at a more comfortable pace. We can work with you to design a phased plan that fits your needs and timeline.
Can the homeowner participate in the cleanup?
Yes, and we encourage it when the homeowner wants to be involved. Participating in sorting and decision-making gives the homeowner control over the process and often leads to better long-term outcomes. Our team follows the homeowner's pace and respects all decisions about what stays and what goes. If the homeowner prefers not to be present, we can also work with direction provided in advance.
Do you coordinate donations and disposal?
Yes. We coordinate sorting items into categories: keep, donate, recycle, and discard. For donations, we can organize items and arrange drop-off to local donation centers. We also coordinate recycling for electronics, paper shredding for sensitive documents, appliance removal, mattress removal, furniture hauling, and general trash removal. Disposal and hauling fees may be included in your project quote or billed separately depending on volume.
Do you travel outside North Carolina?
Yes, for approved projects. Lumina Clean LLC is available to travel for hoarding cleanup projects outside of North Carolina. Out-of-state travel is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Travel, lodging, and related expenses are quoted as part of the overall project estimate. A video consultation is typically completed before scheduling any out-of-state on-site visit.
How are hoarding projects priced?
Every hoarding project is unique, so pricing is always customized after an assessment. Factors that affect cost include the severity level of accumulation, the size of the property and number of affected rooms, the presence of hazardous materials, the amount of disposal and hauling required, labor and team size, specialty equipment or PPE needs, and any travel requirements.
Starting price ranges:
- Level 1–2 (Light Clutter): $850 – $1,200
- Level 3 (Moderate): $1,500 – $2,800
- Level 4 (Severe): $3,000 – $6,000
- Level 5 (Extreme): $7,000 – $15,000+
Travel, lodging, disposal, specialty equipment, PPE, hazardous conditions, and additional labor may be quoted separately.
Do you handle biohazards?
Some biohazardous conditions — such as animal waste, rodent droppings, mold, and strong odors — can be addressed by our team with appropriate PPE and procedures. However, certain extreme biohazard conditions (such as human biological waste beyond our safety capabilities, or situations requiring certified biohazard remediation) may be outside our licensing, insurance, or training scope. In those cases, we will let you know upfront and may recommend a certified biohazard remediation company. Your safety and our team's safety always come first.
Do you provide therapy or mental-health support?
No. Lumina Clean LLC is a cleaning and organization company. We do not provide medical, psychological, or mental-health treatment of any kind. We approach every project with compassion and respect, and we may work alongside licensed mental-health or social-service professionals when appropriate — but the professional therapeutic work is separate from our cleanup services. If you or a loved one needs mental-health support for hoarding disorder, we encourage you to consult a licensed behavioral-health professional.
Are estimates free?
Yes. Consultations and project assessments are free of charge for local projects. For out-of-state projects, a video consultation is free; any travel for an in-person assessment would be discussed and agreed upon before scheduling. Submitting our intake form is always free and carries no obligation.
Is a deposit required?
Deposit requirements vary by project scope. For smaller projects, a deposit may not be required. For larger or multi-day projects, a deposit will typically be required to reserve dates and cover initial labor and supply costs. Deposit terms will be clearly outlined in your project proposal before any work begins.
How does travel affect the project cost for out-of-state clients?
Travel costs are quoted separately and added to the base project estimate. Lumina Clean LLC is based in the Triad region of North Carolina (Eastern Time Zone). The further we need to travel, the higher the travel surcharge due to airfare, lodging, per diem, and logistics.
Approximate regional travel surcharges:
- Local (Triad NC): No surcharge
- Eastern Time Zone states (VA, SC, TN, GA, FL, etc.): +$150–$600
- Central Time Zone (TX, IL, MO, etc.): +$600–$1,200
- Mountain Time Zone (CO, UT, AZ, etc.): +$900–$1,800
- Pacific Time Zone (CA, OR, WA): +$1,200–$2,500
- Hawaii & Alaska: +$2,000–$4,000+
- International: Full custom quote required
All travel estimates are finalized in your written project proposal after a video consultation. Lodging is quoted at cost with no markup.
Can a family member submit the form on behalf of the homeowner?
Yes. Family members, friends, social workers, and property managers are welcome to submit an assessment request on behalf of a homeowner. Please indicate your relationship to the homeowner on the form. We handle all submissions with complete discretion and confidentiality. Please note that for the work to proceed, the homeowner's participation and consent will be part of our discussion during the consultation.
